Soviet–Japanese border conflicts

A series of armed clashes between Soviet and Japanese forces along their borders and those of allied Mongolia and Manchukuo, culminating in the 1939 Battle of Khalkhin Gol.

Battle of Khalkhin Gol: A 1939 Soviet–Mongolian victory over Japanese forces that ended a major border war in eastern Mongolia. This decisive battle culminated the conflicts and demonstrated the scale of Soviet military response.
Manchukuo–Mongolia border disputes: Disputes over the boundary between Japanese-controlled Manchukuo and the Mongolian People's Republic. Unsettled boundaries provided the immediate ground for repeated armed encounters.
Japanese invasion of Manchuria: Japan’s 1931 military seizure of Manchuria, followed by the creation of the puppet state Manchukuo. The occupation brought Japanese power directly to the Soviet and Mongolian frontiers.
Soviet–Japanese Neutrality Pact: A 1941 agreement in which the Soviet Union and Japan pledged neutrality toward one another. The pact helped stabilize the frontier after the clashes and freed both states to focus elsewhere.

Changkufeng Incident: The 1938 Soviet–Japanese border clash around Changkufeng Hill, known in Japan as the Lake Khasan Incident. The incident name highlights the contested border terrain that triggered the 1938 battle.
Mongolian People's Republic: A Soviet-aligned state established in 1924 between the Soviet Union and China. Mongolia’s alliance with the Soviet Union made its frontier a theater of the conflicts.
