Socialist realism: An artistic doctrine that presents socialist society as advancing toward communism through accessible, optimistic works. It became the official method used to judge and produce much Soviet literature.
How the Steel Was Tempered: Nikolai Ostrovsky's 1932–1934 novel about Pavel Korchagin, a revolutionary who perseveres through hardship. Its exemplary hero embodied the disciplined revolutionary often praised by Soviet institutions.

Russian Association of Proletarian Writers: A Soviet literary organization that promoted proletarian writing and class-based criticism from 1925 to 1932. Its campaigns helped establish ideological tests for writers before the 1930s centralization.
Tamizdat: The publication abroad of works that could not be published in the Soviet Union. It gave excluded writers an alternative route to publication and recognition.
Glavlit: The Soviet state agency responsible for censoring publications and controlling access to information. Its censorship helped determine which works could enter public circulation.
