Soviet occupation zone

The eastern zone of Germany administered by the Soviet Union from 1945 until 1949, when it became the German Democratic Republic.

Allied Control Council: The four-power body established in 1945 to govern occupied Germany jointly. It coordinated the occupation powers, though Soviet-Western disagreements increasingly paralyzed it.
