Soviet patriotism

Soviet patriotism was an official civic ideology that encouraged loyalty to the Soviet state and homeland while presenting Soviet identity as multinational and socialist.

October Revolution: The 1917 Bolshevik seizure of power that overthrew Russia’s Provisional Government and began Soviet rule. The revolutionary state initially framed loyalty through class solidarity rather than traditional nationalism.
Soviet education: The state-directed system of schooling and political instruction established in the Soviet Union. Curricula taught a shared account of Soviet history, citizenship, and duty.
Proletarian internationalism: The Marxist principle that workers share interests across national borders and should unite politically. It supplied Soviet ideology’s universalist ideal, which patriotic appeals sometimes qualified.
Soviet partisans: Irregular fighters who resisted Axis occupation behind German lines in the Soviet Union during World War II. Their resistance became a prominent example of popular defense of the Soviet homeland.

Russian nationalism: Political movements and beliefs that prioritize Russian national identity, interests, or sovereignty. Soviet patriotism could draw on Russian symbols without formally equating the USSR with Russia.
Soviet war memorials: Monuments and commemorative sites honoring Soviet military dead and victory, especially in World War II. Their public presence preserves an enduring, visible language of patriotic sacrifice.
Joseph Stalin: The Soviet leader who ruled from the late 1920s until his death in 1953. Under Stalin, state policy increasingly invoked Russian history and national traditions alongside socialist loyalty.
Pioneer movement: A Soviet youth organization for schoolchildren, modeled on scouting and associated with Communist ideals. Its ceremonies and pledges introduced children to collective service and Soviet symbols.
