Soviet space program

The Soviet Union’s state-directed effort to develop rocketry and conduct human and robotic spaceflight from the 1950s until its dissolution in 1991.

R-7 Semyorka: A Soviet rocket family derived from the first successful intercontinental ballistic missile, later used to launch spacecraft. Its adaptable design became the launch vehicle behind the program’s earliest orbital milestones.
Sergei Korolev: A Soviet rocket engineer who led the design bureau responsible for the first satellites and crewed spaceflights. His leadership and engineering choices set the direction of the program’s early successes.

German V-2 rocket: A German ballistic missile developed during World War II and the first human-made object to reach space. Its technology and captured expertise informed postwar Soviet missile development.
Vostok 1: The 1961 Soviet mission that carried Yuri Gagarin on the first human spaceflight. It delivered the program’s defining crewed milestone and a major propaganda victory.
N1 rocket: A Soviet super-heavy launch vehicle developed for crewed lunar missions that never reached orbit successfully. Its repeated launch failures prevented the Soviet lunar program from matching Apollo’s landings.
