Soweto

Soweto is a large urban township southwest of Johannesburg, established under apartheid as a residential area for Black people. It became a major center of resistance to apartheid and a defining part of South Africa’s modern history.

Apartheid: A system of institutionalized racial segregation and white minority rule in South Africa from 1948 to the early 1990s. Apartheid policies created and governed Soweto as a racially designated residential area.
Soweto uprising: A student-led protest in Soweto on June 16, 1976, against the compulsory use of Afrikaans in schools. The uprising made Soweto internationally known as a center of resistance to apartheid.
