Space manufacturing

Space manufacturing is the production or processing of materials and products in space. It uses conditions such as microgravity and vacuum to make or improve goods.

ZBLAN optical fiber: A fluoride glass fiber designed to transmit light with low optical loss. Experiments in microgravity test whether reduced crystallization can yield longer, clearer fibers.
Microgravity: A condition in which apparent weight is very small because a system and its contents are in free fall together. It reduces buoyancy-driven flow and sedimentation during some manufacturing processes.

In-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing: Activities that maintain, assemble, or manufacture spacecraft and structures in orbit. Space manufacturing is one part of this broader set of orbital capabilities.
Launch economics: The costs and constraints governing the transport of payloads from Earth into space. Launch prices often determine whether orbital production beats making and shipping a product from Earth.
Semiconductor crystal growth: The controlled formation of crystalline semiconductor material for electronic and optical devices. Space experiments investigate how reduced buoyancy-driven flow affects crystal quality.
Capillary action: The movement of liquid through narrow spaces due to surface tension and adhesion. Surface tension can guide fluids when gravity-driven settling is weak.
