The Cold War competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to achieve milestones in spaceflight, especially from the 1950s through the 1970s.

Sputnik 1: The first artificial satellite, launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957. Its launch began the public crisis that made the competition unmistakable.
Intercontinental ballistic missile: A ballistic missile designed to deliver weapons across intercontinental distances. Rocket technology developed for military delivery also enabled early satellite launchers.
V-2 rocket: A German ballistic missile developed during World War II and used against Allied cities. Its technology and specialists were captured by both emerging superpowers.
