Spanish Armada

The Spanish Armada was the fleet Philip II sent to invade England in 1588. English attacks and severe weather disrupted its campaign and forced its retreat around the British Isles.

Francis Drake: An English naval commander and privateer who helped lead resistance to the Spanish Armada. His attacks helped drive the Armada north from the English Channel.
Philip II of Spain: King of Spain from 1556 to 1598 and ruler of a vast Habsburg empire. He ordered the Armada as part of his campaign against Elizabethan England.
Medina Sidonia: Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, the Spanish nobleman appointed commander of the Armada in 1588. He led the fleet despite having little experience in naval warfare.
English Reformation: The political and religious transformation that established the Church of England as separate from papal authority. The invasion was framed as a Catholic effort to reverse England’s Protestant settlement.
Battle of Gravelines: The 1588 naval battle in which English forces attacked the Spanish Armada near Gravelines in the southern North Sea. This engagement shattered the Armada’s formation and ended its attempt to link with Parma’s army.
Elizabeth I: Queen of England and Ireland from 1558 to 1603. Her government backed the Dutch revolt and authorized attacks on Spanish interests.
Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham: The English lord admiral who commanded the fleet opposing the Armada in 1588. He directed England’s naval response alongside commanders including Drake.
Spanish Empire: The overseas and European territories ruled by the Spanish monarchy from the fifteenth through nineteenth centuries. The Armada’s failure damaged prestige but did not end Spanish imperial power.
Fire ships: Vessels set alight and sent toward enemy ships to cause damage or force them to maneuver. English fire ships at Calais scattered the Armada’s tightly anchored fleet.
Anglo-Spanish War (1585–1604): A prolonged conflict between England and Spain that began in 1585 and continued intermittently until 1604. The Armada was the war’s largest Spanish invasion effort.
