Spanish East Indies

Spain’s Asian and Pacific possessions, governed chiefly from the Philippines from the sixteenth century until Spanish rule ended in 1898.

Captaincy General of the Philippines: The Spanish colonial government that administered the Philippines and several nearby Pacific territories. It provided the principal administrative framework for Spain’s Asian and Pacific possessions.
Ferdinand Magellan: A Portuguese-born navigator who led Spain’s first expedition to sail around the world. His expedition reached the Philippines in 1521, beginning Spain’s sustained engagement with the archipelago.
Chinese silk: Silk produced in China, traded widely across Asia and exported to the Americas and Europe. Chinese silk was among the valuable Asian goods carried west from Manila.
Portuguese Empire: A maritime empire that built trading posts and colonies across Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Portugal contested Spain’s claims and trade routes in Asia under early imperial agreements.
Philippine Revolution: An armed struggle begun in 1896 by Filipino revolutionaries against Spanish colonial rule. It weakened Spain’s hold on the central possession before the 1898 transfer of sovereignty.
Manila galleon: A Spanish transpacific trading system linking Manila and Acapulco from 1565 to 1815. It connected the Philippine center of Spanish rule to New Spain and global commerce.
Battle of Mactan: A 1521 clash in the Philippines in which Lapulapu’s forces defeated Magellan’s landing party. The battle marked an early limit to Spanish attempts to impose control in the islands.
Mexican silver: Silver mined in New Spain, especially Mexico, that circulated through Spanish imperial trade networks. American silver paid for Asian goods and helped sustain the Manila trade.
Dutch East India Company: A Dutch chartered company founded in 1602 to conduct trade and exercise colonial power in Asia. Its commercial and military expansion challenged Spanish and Portuguese dominance in the region.
Spanish-American War: An 1898 conflict between Spain and the United States that ended Spanish rule in several colonies. Its outcome brought the decisive military defeat that ended Spain’s Asian empire.
