Spanish liberalism

Spanish liberalism was a political movement advocating constitutional government, civil equality, and reform of Spain’s institutions, especially from the early nineteenth century. Its conflicts with absolutism and traditional privilege shaped the country’s politics.

Peninsular War: A conflict from 1808 to 1814 in which Spain and its allies fought French occupation. The occupation and royal crisis created the conditions for Spain’s first liberal political experiments.
Trienio Liberal: The period from 1820 to 1823 when Fernando VII was forced to restore constitutional government in Spain. A military uprising reopened the 1812 constitutional experiment and exposed its internal divisions.
Agustín de Argüelles: A Spanish liberal politician who helped draft the Constitution of 1812 and later served in government. His constitutional work linked the Cádiz generation to later liberal politics.
Spanish absolutism: A political system in which the Spanish monarch claims extensive authority with few constitutional limits. Liberal constitutionalism defined itself against the restoration of unchecked royal power.
Cortes of Cádiz: A representative assembly that met in Cádiz during the Peninsular War and issued major liberal reforms. Its deputies gave the movement an institutional center while the monarchy was absent.
Pronunciamiento: A military declaration or uprising intended to force a change of government in Spain or another Spanish-speaking country. Liberal officers used this recurring intervention to compel monarchs to accept constitutional rule.
Rafael del Riego: A Spanish army officer whose 1820 uprising compelled Fernando VII to restore the Constitution of 1812. His pronunciamiento triggered the Trienio Liberal and made him a liberal symbol.
Carlism: A Spanish traditionalist movement supporting a rival Bourbon claimant, Catholic authority, and the defense of regional privileges. Carlist opposition turned liberal state-building into a prolonged dynastic and ideological conflict.
Spanish Constitution of 1812: A liberal constitution adopted by the Cortes of Cádiz that established national sovereignty and a constitutional monarchy. Known as La Pepa, it became the movement’s defining early constitutional text.
Spanish Constitution of 1837: A Spanish constitution that combined national sovereignty with a bicameral legislature and a constitutional monarchy. It embodied a negotiated liberal settlement after the First Carlist War began.
