Spanish Maquis

The Spanish Maquis were anti-Franco guerrillas who continued armed resistance in Spain after the Spanish Civil War, chiefly from the late 1930s into the 1950s.

Guerrilla warfare: A form of irregular warfare using small, mobile forces against a stronger opponent. Maquis fighters relied on ambushes, sabotage, and mobility rather than conventional battles.
Spanish Civil War: The 1936–1939 conflict between Spain’s Republican government and the Nationalist forces led by Francisco Franco. The Republic’s defeat sent former soldiers and supporters into exile or armed hiding.
Francisco Franco: Spanish general who led the Nationalist victory in the Civil War and ruled Spain as dictator from 1939 to 1975. His dictatorship was the regime the guerrillas sought to overthrow.
Anti-Francoism: Political opposition to the dictatorship of Francisco Franco in Spain. The maquis formed one armed current within a broader and changing opposition.
Spanish Civil Guard: Spain’s national gendarmerie, responsible for policing and internal security. The Civil Guard led many operations to locate and suppress guerrilla groups.
Republican faction (Spanish Civil War): The coalition that defended Spain’s Second Republic during the Spanish Civil War. Many maquis had fought for, or supported, the defeated Republican side.
Manuel Girón: A former Republican combatant who led a long-running guerrilla group in the mountains of León. Girón became one of the best-known maquis commanders in northwestern Spain.
Spanish transition to democracy: The political transformation from Franco’s dictatorship to parliamentary democracy, beginning after Franco’s death in 1975. Later democratic politics reopened public debate about resistance and repression.
Political commissar: A political officer who oversees ideological instruction and political discipline within an organization. Communist-linked guerrilla units used political organization alongside armed operations.
Spanish Republican exile: The displacement of Spanish Republicans who fled Franco’s victory, especially into France. Exile communities became a source of organization and recruitment for resistance efforts.
