Spanish Netherlands

The Habsburg-ruled Low Countries under Spanish sovereignty, broadly corresponding to present-day Belgium and Luxembourg and parts of the Netherlands and northern France. Its political history was shaped by revolt, confessional conflict, and the contest between Spain and France.

Burgundian Netherlands: The Low Countries territories united under the dukes of Burgundy during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The Burgundian inheritance formed the territorial base later ruled by the Spanish Habsburgs.
Seventeen Provinces: The group of Low Countries territories brought together under Habsburg rule in the sixteenth century. The Spanish Netherlands inherited a provincial structure rather than a unified kingdom.
Margaret of Parma: A Habsburg governor of the Netherlands from 1559 to 1567 and the half-sister of Philip II. Her regency faced the growing crisis that preceded the Dutch Revolt.
Twelve Years' Truce: A ceasefire between Spain and the Dutch Republic lasting from 1609 to 1621. The truce temporarily recognized the Dutch Republic while the southern provinces remained under Habsburg rule.
Dutch Republic: A confederation of northern Dutch provinces that became independent from Spain in the seventeenth century. Its Protestant, republican government contrasted with the Catholic Habsburg monarchy to the south.
Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor: The Habsburg ruler who governed a vast European and American empire from 1519 to 1556. He inherited and consolidated the Low Countries before abdicating in favor of his son Philip II.
Governor of the Habsburg Netherlands: The monarch's chief representative in the Habsburg Netherlands, responsible for administration and military affairs. Governors exercised royal authority while negotiating with local estates and provincial institutions.
Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba: A Spanish general and governor of the Netherlands from 1567 to 1573. His repression and taxation campaign helped deepen opposition to Spanish rule.
Treaty of Münster: The 1648 agreement that ended the Dutch Republic's war with Spain and recognized Dutch independence. It formalized the separation between the independent north and the Spanish Netherlands.
Kingdom of France: The French monarchy that ruled France from the Middle Ages until the French Revolution. France repeatedly challenged Spanish control of the southern Low Countries.
