Spanish Road

The Spanish Road was a network of land routes that Spain used from the late sixteenth century to move troops from its territories in Italy through the Alps to the Habsburg Netherlands.

Duchy of Milan: A state in northern Italy ruled by Spain from 1535 to 1706. Milan was the Spanish Road’s main starting point and supply base.
Habsburg Netherlands: The Low Countries territories ruled by the Habsburg dynasty before their division during the Dutch Revolt. The Spanish Road connected Spain’s Italian possessions to this distant territory.
Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba: A Spanish nobleman and general who served as governor of the Netherlands from 1567 to 1573. Alba led troops from Italy to the Netherlands over the route in 1567.
Eighty Years’ War: The conflict between the Spanish Habsburgs and the Dutch rebels from 1568 to 1648. Keeping troops in the Netherlands supplied was central to the road’s purpose.
Franche-Comté: A historical region east of Burgundy, ruled by the Spanish Habsburgs until its conquest by France in 1674. Its territory offered a key passage between the Alps and the Low Countries.
Italian Wars: A series of European wars fought mainly in Italy from 1494 to 1559. Their outcome left Spain with Italian territories that became the road’s southern base.
Manuel Filiberto of Savoy: Duke of Savoy from 1553 to 1580, who restored his state after the Italian Wars. His alliance with Spain helped secure passage through Savoy.
Thirty Years’ War: A European conflict fought from 1618 to 1648, involving dynastic, territorial, and religious struggles. Wartime alliances and campaigns repeatedly disrupted the route’s passage through central Europe.
Savoy: A historical state centered in the western Alps, whose rulers controlled important Alpine passes. Spanish agreements with Savoy opened routes across the western Alps.
Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis: The 1559 treaties that ended the Italian Wars and established Spanish predominance in Italy. The settlement secured Spanish control of key territories for the route.
