Spartan hegemony

Spartan hegemony was Sparta’s period of dominance over much of Greece after Athens surrendered in 404 BCE. It relied on military power, allied oligarchies, and garrisons, but faced resistance and eventually ended with Sparta’s defeat at Leuctra.

Thirty Tyrants: An oligarchic regime installed in Athens under Spartan influence after the Peloponnesian War. Its brief rule shows how Spartan victory translated into political intervention in defeated cities.
Peloponnesian War: A prolonged conflict between Athens and Sparta, with their respective allies, from 431 to 404 BCE. Its outcome removed Athens as Sparta’s principal rival and opened the way to Spartan dominance.
Theban hegemony: The period of Theban dominance in Greece after its victory over Sparta at Leuctra in 371 BCE. Theban ascendancy replaced Spartan leadership after the hegemony’s decisive battlefield collapse.

Athenian hegemony: The period when Athens led a large network of Greek states, especially during the fifth century BCE. The earlier Athenian-led order provides the clearest comparison for Sparta’s postwar supremacy.
Decarchy: A ruling council of ten, often installed in Greek cities under Spartan influence. Decarchies gave local form to Spartan-backed oligarchic rule.
Surrender of Athens: Athens’s capitulation to Sparta in 404 BCE, ending the Peloponnesian War. The surrender marked the beginning of Sparta’s postwar ascendancy.
