Spatialism is an Italian postwar art movement founded by Lucio Fontana. It sought to unite art with space, light, movement, and new technologies.

Lucio Fontana: Lucio Fontana was an Italian-Argentine artist whose slashed canvases and writings established Spatialism. Fontana founded the movement and gave its ideas their most influential artistic form.
Concetto spaziale: Concetto spaziale is the title Fontana used for many works exploring space through material intervention. The recurring title frames each work as an inquiry into space, not merely an image.

Spatial Concept, The End of God: Spatial Concept, The End of God is a group of Fontana’s vividly colored, punctured oval canvases from the early 1960s. Its shaped canvases and clustered holes extend Spatialist experimentation beyond the conventional rectangle.
Concrete art: Concrete art uses self-sufficient geometric forms and colors rather than representing external subjects. Spatialism shared an interest in nonrepresentational art but stressed space beyond the picture’s surface.
Spatialist Manifesto: The Spatialist Manifesto is a series of texts in which Fontana and collaborators set out the movement’s aims. These statements explain how Spatialists connected artistic practice with contemporary science and technology.
Spatialist holes: Spatialist holes are punctures Fontana made in canvases, often arranged in patterns across the surface. The punctures make the canvas porous and give its material surface actual depth.
