Species Delimitation

Species delimitation is the process of deciding which populations or organisms belong to distinct species. It applies species concepts to evidence such as reproductive isolation, ancestry, morphology, and ecological differences.

Morphological Species Concept: A species concept that distinguishes species by consistent differences in observable form and structure. It delimits species by comparing anatomical traits, especially when breeding or genetic data are unavailable.
Species: A basic unit of biological classification comprising organisms grouped by shared characteristics and evolutionary relationships. Delimitation is the task of deciding which populations merit recognition as separate units of this kind.
DNA Barcoding: A method that uses short, standardized DNA sequences to help identify organisms and distinguish lineages. Barcode differences can flag candidate species, but thresholds alone do not establish species boundaries.
Typological Species Concept: An approach that treats species as fixed types defined by characteristic traits rather than variable evolving populations. It emphasizes resemblance to an ideal form, unlike lineage-based delimitation of variable populations.
