Species Plantarum

Carl Linnaeus’s 1753 work that systematically named plant species using two-part Latin names. Its publication date became the starting point for botanical nomenclature.

Carl Linnaeus: Swedish naturalist who developed a widely adopted system for naming and classifying organisms. He authored Species Plantarum and organized its species descriptions.
Taxonomy: The practice of identifying, describing, naming, and classifying organisms. The book joined naming and classification in a single systematic work.
Starting point (botanical nomenclature): The date from which names in a nomenclatural group are generally considered for priority. For most plants, the starting point is Species Plantarum’s publication in 1753.
Arabidopsis thaliana: A small flowering plant widely used as a model organism in plant biology. Linnaeus published its species name in Species Plantarum.
Botanical nomenclature: The rules and conventions for naming plants, algae, and fungi. The book became the nomenclatural starting point for these groups.
Specific epithet: The second part of a species name in binomial nomenclature, following the genus name. Linnaeus paired each epithet with a genus to form a species name.
Linnaean taxonomy: A system of classifying organisms into nested ranks, associated with Linnaeus. Species Plantarum helped make this ranked approach practical for plants.
Solanum tuberosum: The cultivated potato, a tuber-producing plant in the nightshade family. Its scientific name appears in the book’s treatment of cultivated plants.
Philosophia Botanica: Linnaeus’s 1751 book outlining principles for botanical classification and naming. It set out the naming principles applied in Species Plantarum.
Typification (botany): The process of attaching a scientific name to a nomenclatural type. Modern rules stabilize many names first published in the book through types.
