Specific heat capacity

Specific heat capacity is the heat energy required to raise one unit of a substance’s mass by one degree of temperature. It depends on the substance and can vary with temperature and physical state.

Heat capacity: Heat capacity is the heat required to raise an object’s temperature by one degree. It is the total-object quantity obtained by multiplying specific heat capacity by mass.
Heat: Heat is energy transferred between systems because of a temperature difference. The capacity is defined by the amount of this energy needed for a specified temperature rise.
Water: Water is the chemical compound H₂O, common on Earth in liquid, solid, and gaseous forms. Its high specific heat capacity moderates temperature changes in oceans and living systems.
Molar heat capacity: Molar heat capacity is the heat required to raise the temperature of one mole of a substance by one degree. It normalizes heat capacity by amount of substance rather than by mass.
Calorimetry: Calorimetry measures heat transferred in physical or chemical processes. Calorimeters use temperature changes and known heat capacities to quantify transferred energy.
Mass: Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in a body. Specific heat capacity divides an object’s heat capacity by its mass.
Thermal mass: Thermal mass is a material’s capacity to absorb, store, and release heat. Specific heat capacity helps determine how much heat a building material stores per unit mass.
Volumetric heat capacity: Volumetric heat capacity is the heat required to raise a unit volume of a material by one degree. It replaces the mass basis with volume, making density part of the comparison.
First law of thermodynamics: The first law states that energy is conserved, changing form or moving between system and surroundings. Heat supplied to a sample changes its internal energy, often observed as a temperature rise.
Kelvin: The kelvin is the SI base unit of thermodynamic temperature. A temperature interval of one kelvin has the same magnitude as one degree Celsius.
