Spectral music

A compositional approach that derives musical structure from the acoustic properties of sound, especially its spectrum of partials and changing timbre.

Harmonic series: The sequence of frequencies that are integer multiples of a sound’s fundamental frequency. Its partials supply many of the pitch collections and harmonic models used in spectral composition.
Groupe de recherches musicales: A French institution founded by Pierre Schaeffer for research into recorded sound and electroacoustic music. Its sound-based research helped establish the technological and aesthetic setting for spectral composition.
Partiels: A 1975 ensemble work by Gérard Grisey, built around the analysis and orchestral reconstruction of a trombone sound. It is a canonical demonstration of turning one sound’s spectrum into musical structure.
Hugues Dufourt: A French composer and philosopher who coined the expression “musique spectrale” in a 1979 essay. His terminology gave a name to the emerging approach and its shared concerns.
Serialism: A compositional method that organizes musical parameters through ordered series, especially rows of pitches. Spectral composers often sought alternatives to serial pitch organization, deriving material from acoustic phenomena instead.
Fourier transform: A mathematical operation that represents a signal as a sum of sinusoidal components. It provides a way to analyze the component frequencies that spectral composers use as musical material.
IRCAM: A Paris institute for research and coordination in acoustics and music, founded by Pierre Boulez. Its computer tools and research culture supported the analysis and synthesis central to spectral practice.
Gondwana: A 1980 orchestral work by Tristan Murail that moves between instrumental and synthesized sonorities. Its transformations make spectral timbre and harmony audible across a large-scale form.
Michaël Levinas: A French composer and pianist associated with the early spectral movement. His work formed part of the movement’s original Parisian circle.
Musique concrète: A form of electroacoustic music built from recorded sounds manipulated as compositional material. Both approaches begin with sound, but spectral music commonly translates acoustic analysis into instrumental composition.
