Spermatogenesis

Spermatogenesis is the production of mature sperm cells from spermatogonial stem cells, chiefly within the seminiferous tubules of the testes. It combines cell division, meiosis, and specialized cell remodeling.

Spermatogonial stem cell: A self-renewing germ cell that maintains sperm production and gives rise to differentiating spermatogonia. This is the starting cell whose renewal and differentiation sustain spermatogenesis.
Seminiferous tubule: A coiled testicular tubule in which sperm are produced. Germ cells develop along its walls before mature sperm are released into its lumen.
Male infertility: The inability to achieve pregnancy attributable to factors involving the male reproductive system. Impaired spermatogenesis is a major cause of male-factor infertility.
Oogenesis: The process by which female germ cells develop into mature ova. Unlike sperm production, it yields few large gametes and follows a different meiotic schedule.
Spermatocyte: A germ cell that undergoes meiotic divisions to produce haploid spermatids. Spermatogonia enter meiosis as primary spermatocytes before chromosome number is halved.
Testis: A male reproductive organ that produces sperm and secretes testosterone. The seminiferous tubules sit within the testes, the organs that house this process.
Semen analysis: A laboratory examination measuring sperm concentration, movement, and morphology in an ejaculate. Its results can reveal consequences of abnormal sperm production, though they do not directly examine the testes.
Spermiation: The release of mature spermatozoa from Sertoli cells into the seminiferous tubule lumen. It follows spermiogenesis and releases sperm; it is not the formation process itself.
Meiosis: A two-stage cell division that reduces chromosome number by half and reshuffles genetic material. It produces haploid cells and genetic variation during sperm development.
Spermatogenic cycle: The recurring sequence of germ-cell associations along a seminiferous tubule as spermatogenesis proceeds. Its staged organization explains how different germ-cell cohorts develop in sequence.
