Sphalerite

Sphalerite is zinc sulfide (ZnS), a mineral and the principal ore of zinc. Its color ranges from pale yellow to dark brown or black, and its lustrous crystals often show prominent cleavage.

Zinc sulfide: Zinc sulfide is an inorganic compound with formula ZnS, occurring naturally as sphalerite and wurtzite. Sphalerite is the common cubic mineral form of this compound.
Crystal field theory: Crystal field theory describes how surrounding ions split the energy levels of a transition-metal ion. Iron substitutions in sphalerite affect light absorption and can darken its color.
Zinc: Zinc is a bluish-white metal used chiefly for galvanizing steel, making alloys, and manufacturing chemicals. Smelting sphalerite is the main route by which zinc enters industrial supply.
Picos de Europa: The Picos de Europa is a mountain range in northern Spain containing major zinc-lead deposits. Its mines produced renowned sphalerite crystals, including prized honey-colored specimens.
Sphalerite structure: The sphalerite structure is a cubic crystal arrangement in which each atom is tetrahedrally coordinated to four atoms of the other kind. This crystal arrangement defines sphalerite’s cubic mineral structure.
Cadmium: Cadmium is a soft, silvery metal that commonly substitutes for zinc in sphalerite and other minerals. Sphalerite can host cadmium in its crystal lattice, making it an important cadmium source.
Froth flotation: Froth flotation separates minerals by making selected particles attach to air bubbles and rise in water. Concentrators commonly use flotation to separate sphalerite from other ore minerals.
Aliva Mine: Aliva Mine is a historic zinc mine in Spain’s Picos de Europa. It is a celebrated source of large, lustrous sphalerite crystals.
Wurtzite: Wurtzite is a hexagonal crystal form of zinc sulfide, distinct from cubic sphalerite. It shares sphalerite’s chemistry but crystallizes in a different structure.
Refractive index: Refractive index measures how much light slows and bends when it enters a material. Sphalerite’s high refractive index contributes to its bright, pronounced luster.
