Spice trade

The long-distance exchange of spices between producing regions and distant markets. It connected Asian producers with merchants and consumers across the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.

Indian Ocean trade: A maritime trading system linking ports around the Indian Ocean basin. Monsoon sailing connected Asian spice producers to ports in Arabia, East Africa, and beyond.
Spice Islands: The Maluku Islands of eastern Indonesia, historically the world’s principal source of cloves, nutmeg, and mace. Their rare spices drew long-distance merchants and eventually European expeditions.
Vasco da Gama: A Portuguese navigator who led the first European sea voyage to India around the Cape of Good Hope in 1497–1499. His voyage opened a direct Portuguese maritime route to Indian spice markets.
Age of Discovery: The period of European oceanic exploration and expansion beginning in the fifteenth century. European efforts to bypass established spice intermediaries helped spur Atlantic and Indian Ocean voyages.
Portuguese India Armadas: Annual Portuguese fleets that sailed between Lisbon and India via the Cape of Good Hope from 1500. They pursued armed maritime control, unlike older networks built around many independent merchants.
Monsoon: A seasonal reversal of prevailing winds that shapes rainfall and navigation in parts of Asia and the Indian Ocean. Predictable wind reversals made recurring voyages between India and Arabia possible.
Malabar Coast: A coastal region of southwestern India long known for producing and exporting black pepper. Pepper from this coast was a major commodity in westbound trade.
Afonso de Albuquerque: A Portuguese commander who helped establish Portugal’s naval and fortress network in the Indian Ocean in the early sixteenth century. His campaigns sought to control key passages and ports in the spice trade.
Dutch colonial empire: The overseas territories and commercial holdings controlled by the Netherlands, especially from the seventeenth century onward. Dutch efforts to dominate spice production tied trade to colonial rule in Southeast Asia.
Dutch East India Company monopoly: The Dutch East India Company’s effort to restrict production and trade in selected spices to secure high prices. Its coercive monopolies contrasted with the more distributed trading arrangements that preceded European dominance.
