Spinning frame

A textile machine that draws out fibers and twists them into yarn. Multiple spindles let it spin many strands at once.

Spindle (textiles): A rotating rod or shaft that twists fibers into yarn and winds the yarn as it forms. Each spindle adds twist to a strand drawn through the frame.
Richard Arkwright: An English inventor and industrialist associated with the water frame and the factory system. His water frame helped establish powered, factory-based spinning.
Cotton spinning: The conversion of cotton fibers into yarn through cleaning, carding, drawing, and spinning. The frame’s early industrial success centered on mechanizing cotton yarn production.
Factory system: A production system that brings workers and machinery together in a centralized workplace. Frames’ size and power requirements encouraged centralized mill production.
Drawing frame: A textile machine that aligns and attenuates fiber slivers by passing them through successive roller pairs. Its roller drafting principle underlies how a spinning frame thins fibers before twisting.
James Hargreaves: An English weaver and inventor traditionally credited with developing the spinning jenny. His machine preceded the spinning frame and prompted a competing approach to mechanized spinning.
Wool spinning: The process of twisting prepared wool fibers into yarn. Wool required adaptations to fiber preparation and drafting compared with cotton.
Power loom: A mechanically driven loom that weaves cloth more quickly than a handloom. Mechanized spinning supplied the yarn needed by increasingly productive looms.
Flyer (textile machinery): A rotating guide that inserts twist into roving and winds it onto a bobbin in a flyer spinning machine. Flyers coordinate twist and winding in a major frame design.
Samuel Crompton: An English inventor who developed the spinning mule, combining features of the jenny and water frame. The mule adapted frame principles to spin finer cotton yarn.
