Spinning mule

A textile machine that spins fibers into yarn by combining the drawing rollers of a water frame with the moving carriage of a spinning jenny. Its intermittent motion produces strong, fine yarn.

Spinning jenny: A hand-powered machine that spins multiple threads at once using a moving carriage and rows of spindles. Its moving carriage became one half of the mule’s design.
Samuel Crompton: An English inventor who created the spinning mule in the late eighteenth century. Crompton combined existing spinning technologies in the mule.
Mule-spun yarn: Yarn spun on a mule, typically valued for its strength and ability to be made fine. This is the characteristic output of the machine.
Factory system: A mode of production in which workers and machinery are concentrated in a centralized workplace. Mules were large machines operated within increasingly organized textile factories.
Water frame: A water-powered spinning machine that uses rollers to draw fibers and spindles to twist them into yarn. Its roller-drawing system supplied the mule’s other key mechanism.
Industrial Revolution: A period of rapid industrialization, beginning in Britain in the eighteenth century, driven by mechanization and new energy sources. The mule developed amid the rapid mechanization of British textile production.
Muslin: A plain-woven cotton cloth that can be made lightweight and finely textured. Fine mule-spun yarn enabled production of delicate cotton muslins.
Cotton mill: A factory where cotton is processed into yarn or cloth using industrial machinery. Mule spinning became a major operation inside cotton mills.
Roller spinning: A spinning method in which pairs of rollers draw fibers into a thinner strand before twisting. The mule’s rollers draft the fiber before its carriage stretches it further.
Arkwright system: A factory system for cotton spinning built around water-powered machinery and centralized production. The mule’s adoption extended the factory spinning system associated with Arkwright.
