Spirit of the law

The purpose or underlying intent of a law, distinguished from its literal wording. It guides interpretation when the text alone does not settle how the law applies.

Statutory interpretation: The process of determining the meaning and legal effect of legislation. Courts use interpretive methods to connect statutory language with the law’s purpose.
Letter of the law: The explicit wording and formal requirements of a law. It is the textual counterpart to the law’s underlying purpose.
