Spiritual gift

A capacity or service believed to be granted by the Holy Spirit to a Christian for strengthening and serving the church.

Holy Spirit: In Christian theology, the Holy Spirit is God’s presence and action among creation and believers. Spiritual gifts are understood as given by the Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12: A New Testament chapter describing diverse spiritual gifts and the church as one body with many members. It links different gifts to the Spirit and the common good.
Cessationism: The theological view that certain miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit ceased after the apostolic age. It limits which gifts can be expected in the church today.
Glossolalia: Speech in languages unknown to the speaker, interpreted in some Christian traditions as a spiritual phenomenon. Speaking in tongues is one of the gifts named in 1 Corinthians 12.
Church (congregation): A local Christian community gathered for worship, teaching, fellowship, and service. The congregation is the community spiritual gifts are meant to benefit.
Romans 12: A New Testament chapter listing forms of service and exhorting believers to use their differing gifts humbly. Its list emphasizes ordinary forms of contribution alongside prophetic speech.
Continuationism: The theological view that the gifts described in the New Testament remain available to Christians. It contrasts with cessationism by affirming the gifts’ continued operation.
Prophecy: A message presented as inspired by a deity, often involving instruction, warning, or prediction. New Testament lists treat prophecy as a gift for strengthening the congregation.
Charism: A grace-given capacity or role, especially one understood as bestowed by the Holy Spirit. The New Testament’s language of grace-gifts underlies the idea of spiritual gifts.
Ephesians 4: A New Testament chapter describing Christ-given roles that equip the church and build up its members. It presents leadership roles as gifts ordered toward communal maturity.
