Sponge

A sponge is an aquatic animal in the phylum Porifera whose porous body draws water through internal canals for feeding, gas exchange, and waste removal. Most lack true tissues and organs.

Choanocyte: A flagellated sponge cell that drives water flow and captures suspended food particles. Choanocytes line internal chambers, producing the currents behind sponge filter feeding.
Porifera: The animal phylum comprising sponges, characterized by porous bodies and water-based feeding. Sponge is the common name for an animal belonging to this phylum.
Cambrian explosion: A geologically brief interval of rapid animal diversification beginning about 539 million years ago. Fossil sponges contribute evidence about early animal ecosystems during this interval.

Ediacaran biota: A diverse assemblage of mostly soft-bodied organisms preserved in rocks from the Ediacaran Period. Proposed sponge fossils from these deposits bear on how early animal life began.
Marine sponge microbiome: The communities of bacteria, archaea, and other microorganisms living in association with marine sponges. These symbionts contribute to sponge nutrition and produce biologically active compounds.
Sponge grounds: Seafloor habitats dominated by dense populations of sponges. Their three-dimensional structures create habitat for other marine organisms.
