Sports diplomacy

Sports diplomacy is the use of sporting events, athletes, and exchanges to pursue diplomatic or political aims. It can build relationships, signal recognition, or communicate rivalry without formal negotiations.

Ping-pong diplomacy: The 1971 exchange of table-tennis teams between the United States and China that helped thaw relations. A sporting exchange helped prepare the way for renewed U.S.–Chinese diplomatic contact.
Track II diplomacy: Unofficial dialogue among influential people outside formal government negotiations. Athletes and sporting officials can create informal channels between societies and governments.
Pierre de Coubertin: The French educator who founded the modern Olympic movement and promoted the revival of the Olympic Games. His internationalist vision helped establish the Games as a recurring arena for cross-border contact.
Olympic Games: An international multisport event held in summer and winter editions under the Olympic movement. The Games are the most visible recurring stage for state representation and diplomatic symbolism.

1980 Summer Olympics boycott: The boycott of the Moscow Olympics led by the United States in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Governments used Olympic participation as a public instrument of Cold War protest.
Soft power: The ability to influence others through attraction and persuasion rather than coercion or payment. Successful teams and welcoming events can make a country more appealing abroad.
