Sputnik crisis

The political and educational alarm in the United States after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 in 1957, prompting debate over science, defense, and national competitiveness.

National Defense Education Act: A 1958 U.S. law that funded education in science, mathematics, foreign languages, and other fields. Congress answered fears of Soviet technological superiority with federal support for education.
