Squanto

Squanto, also known as Tisquantum, was a Patuxet man who spoke English and assisted the English colonists at Plymouth through diplomacy, translation, and local knowledge.

Massasoit: Massasoit was the leader of the Wampanoag Confederacy during the founding of Plymouth Colony. Squanto worked within the diplomacy Massasoit pursued with the English settlers.
Patuxet people: The Patuxet were a Wampanoag community whose village stood on the site of present-day Plymouth, Massachusetts. Squanto's community was devastated by epidemic disease before the English settlement began.
Plymouth Colony: Plymouth Colony was an English settlement founded in present-day Massachusetts in 1620. Squanto became an interpreter and guide for the colony soon after its founding.
Thanksgiving myth: The Thanksgiving myth is a simplified account of cooperation between English colonists and Native people surrounding the 1621 harvest gathering. Squanto's role in the familiar story is often reduced to teaching the colonists how to grow food.

1621 Plymouth harvest gathering: The 1621 Plymouth harvest gathering was a three-day event attended by English colonists and Wampanoag people. Squanto was associated with the colony during this period, though surviving accounts do not place him at the gathering.
William Bradford: William Bradford was a leader of Plymouth Colony and its governor for much of its early history. Bradford's account is a major English source for Squanto's work at Plymouth.
John Smith: John Smith was an English explorer whose 1614 voyage mapped parts of the New England coast. Squanto returned to New England with Smith's expedition after years away.
