Srivijaya

Srivijaya was a maritime Buddhist polity based in Sumatra that dominated regional trade and parts of Southeast Asia from roughly the seventh to thirteenth centuries.

Palembang: A city in southeastern Sumatra, identified by many scholars as Srivijaya’s principal political center. Its position on the Musi River connected Srivijaya’s inland resources with the Strait of Malacca.
Kedukan Bukit Inscription: A seventh-century Old Malay inscription from Sumatra describing a journey and the founding or expansion of a polity. Its account of a military expedition is among the earliest evidence associated with Srivijaya.
Mahayana Buddhism: A major Buddhist tradition emphasizing the bodhisattva path and the possibility of liberation for all beings. Mahayana practice and patronage formed part of Srivijaya’s religious life and scholarly reputation.
Chola invasion of Srivijaya: A series of attacks by the South Indian Chola dynasty on Srivijayan centers in 1025 CE. The raids disrupted Srivijaya’s political network but did not immediately end its influence.
Strait of Malacca: A narrow sea passage between the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra that links the Indian Ocean with the South China Sea. Srivijaya’s influence over this maritime corridor helped it benefit from passing commerce.
Talang Tuwo Inscription: A 684 CE Old Malay inscription recording the creation of a garden and Buddhist aspirations for its welfare. It documents a ruler’s religious patronage and the polity’s use of Old Malay in public records.
Old Malay: An early form of Malay recorded in inscriptions and used across parts of maritime Southeast Asia. Srivijayan inscriptions show Old Malay serving political communication beyond a single local community.
Majapahit: A Hindu-Buddhist kingdom based in eastern Java that became a major Southeast Asian power in the fourteenth century. Majapahit’s rise belongs to the later political landscape that followed Srivijaya’s period of dominance.
Monsoon: A seasonal wind system that reverses direction and shapes weather and navigation across the Indian Ocean. Predictable wind shifts made port stays and transoceanic voyages central to Srivijaya’s trading system.
I Ching: A Chinese Buddhist monk and pilgrim who traveled through Southeast Asia and India in the seventh century. His accounts describe a major Buddhist learning center in Srivijaya’s sphere.
