Saint Lawrence Seaway

The Saint Lawrence Seaway is a system of locks, canals, and channels linking the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean through the Saint Lawrence River.

Saint Lawrence River: A major North American river flowing from Lake Ontario to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. The seaway follows this river from Lake Ontario toward the Atlantic.
Deep Waterway Treaty of 1932: A 1932 agreement between Canada and the United States proposing a jointly developed deep waterway on the Saint Lawrence. It was an early bilateral attempt to authorize the modern waterway.
Great Lakes: A group of five large freshwater lakes on the Canada–United States border, connected to the Atlantic drainage system. The seaway’s chief inland shipping network begins in these lakes.
Panama Canal: An artificial waterway across Panama that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Unlike the seaway’s continental access route, it links two oceans across an isthmus.
Lock (water transport): An enclosed chamber that raises or lowers vessels between sections of water at different levels. Locks lift and lower ships across the seaway’s elevation changes.
Saint Lawrence Seaway Authority: The Canadian federal agency established to construct and operate Canada’s part of the Saint Lawrence Seaway. It oversaw the Canadian works that made the seaway possible.
Port of Montreal: A major Canadian port on the Saint Lawrence River in Montreal, Quebec. The port became a key transfer point between ocean shipping and inland trade.
Erie Canal: A historic New York canal connecting the Hudson River with Lake Erie. It opened an earlier inland route to the Great Lakes before ocean-going seaway access.
Welland Canal: A ship canal in Ontario connecting Lake Ontario and Lake Erie around Niagara Falls. This canal carries seaway traffic past Niagara Falls.
Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation: The United States government corporation responsible for operating and maintaining the American part of the seaway. Its counterpart carried out the United States’ share of the project.
