Stage direction

Stage direction is the shaping of performers’ actions, entrances, pacing, and spatial relationships in a theatrical production. It coordinates movement and timing to make a script legible in performance.

Blocking: The planned positions and movements of performers onstage. Blocking gives stage direction its concrete pattern of entrances, crossings, and formations.
Dramaturgy: The study and practice of shaping dramatic works for performance and interpretation. Dramaturgical analysis helps ground staging choices in the play's structure.
Proscenium stage: A stage framed by an arch, with the audience seated on one side. Its fixed frontal view shapes sightlines and performer placement.
Konstantin Stanislavski: A Russian theatre practitioner whose system shaped modern actor training and realist performance. His methods connect playable actions with a character's objectives.
Choreography: The composition and arrangement of movement, especially in dance. Choreography overlaps with staging but organizes movement as a distinct compositional practice.

Thrust stage: A stage that projects into the audience, with spectators on three sides. Its surrounding audience demands spatial choices unlike a frontal stage.
Vsevolod Meyerhold: A Russian theatre director known for theatrical experimentation and the training system called biomechanics. His stylized staging made precise physical composition central to performance.
Improvisational theatre: Theatre created spontaneously without a fully predetermined script or performance plan. Improvisation leaves some action and timing open rather than fixing them in advance.
