Stage lighting

Stage lighting is the design and use of light to make performers and scenery visible and to shape mood, focus, and visual effects during live productions.

Stage lighting fixture: A device that produces, shapes, or projects light for a stage. Fixture type determines the beam, color options, and placement possibilities.
Luminous flux: The measure of visible light emitted per unit time, weighted by human visual sensitivity. It describes a source's total visible output before beam direction is considered.
Stage wash: Broad, relatively even illumination covering an area of a stage. A wash establishes general visibility across acting areas or scenery.
Limelight: An intense white light produced by heating lime with an oxyhydrogen flame. Its use in nineteenth-century theatres helped establish the idea of a focused spotlight.
Jean Rosenthal: An American lighting designer who helped establish lighting design as a recognized theatrical profession. Her Broadway work and teaching influenced professional practice and documentation.
Ellipsoidal reflector spotlight: A stage luminaire with an ellipsoidal reflector and lens system that produces a sharply controllable beam. Its shutters and framing accessories create precise pools of light.
Illuminance: The amount of luminous flux falling on a surface per unit area. It helps specify how brightly performers or scenery are lit.
Followspot: A manually operated spotlight that tracks a performer across a performance space. It keeps a moving performer visually prominent.
Gas lighting: Illumination produced by burning manufactured gas in lamps or jets. Gas systems enabled theatres to control stage brightness more extensively than candles.
Tharon Musser: An American theatrical lighting designer known for technical innovation and long Broadway career. Her work advanced complex cueing and large-scale theatrical lighting systems.
