Staggered conformation

A molecular arrangement in which bonds on adjacent atoms are offset around a single bond. In ethane, this arrangement has a 60-degree dihedral angle and minimizes torsional strain.

Torsional strain: Energy associated with resistance to rotation around a bond, often arising from repulsions between bonding electron pairs. Reduced torsional strain explains why staggered ethane is more stable than eclipsed ethane.
Conformation: A spatial arrangement of a molecule that can change through rotations without breaking covalent bonds. Staggered geometry is one member of a molecule’s set of accessible conformations.
Newman projection: A drawing convention that represents a molecule viewed along a selected bond. It makes the offset between front and rear bonds visible at a glance.
