Stalagmometric method

The stalagmometric method determines a liquid’s surface tension by measuring the mass or number of drops formed and released from a capillary.

Tate's law: A relation stating that a slowly detaching drop’s weight is proportional to the liquid’s surface tension and the capillary’s circumference. It provides the ideal force balance behind drop-weight measurements.

Drop count method: A surface-tension measurement technique that compares the numbers of drops from equal volumes of test and reference liquids. It uses the method’s count-based measurement directly.
Capillary tube: A narrow tube whose small bore produces strong effects from surface forces. Its bore and rim set the geometry from which drops detach.
