Standard English

Standard English is a socially recognized variety of English used in formal writing and public institutions. Its conventions are maintained through education, publishing, government, and other institutions.

English grammar: The structural patterns that govern how words and clauses combine in English. Standard English follows widely taught grammatical conventions, though English grammar includes more than the standard variety.
Chancery Standard: A written English variety used by the English royal administration in the later Middle Ages. Its administrative use helped spread shared written conventions beyond local regions.
Nonstandard English: English varieties or forms not conventionally accepted as standard in a particular institution or context. The label marks social and institutional status, not linguistic inferiority.
Standard Written English: The conventional written form of English used in formal and institutional settings. It is the most visible application of standard conventions in writing.
Linguistic prestige: The social value and status attached to a language variety or way of speaking. Institutional recognition gives standard forms prestige beyond their communicative function.
English orthography: The conventional system for spelling and writing English. Standard written English relies on shared spelling and punctuation conventions.
William Caxton: An English merchant and printer who established England’s first printing press in the 1470s. Printing helped circulate relatively consistent written forms across a wider readership.
World Englishes: Localized English varieties that have developed in different societies around the world. Their established norms complicate the idea of a single universal standard.
English language teaching: The teaching and learning of English as a first, additional, or foreign language. Instruction commonly teaches a target standard for academic and public communication.
Dialect prejudice: Negative judgments or unequal treatment directed at speakers because of their dialect. The standard/nonstandard distinction can legitimize prejudice against other English varieties.
