Stanza

A stanza is a grouped set of lines in a poem or song, usually set apart from other groups by spacing or a pause. Its pattern of length, meter, or rhyme can shape the work’s structure.

Verse: A line of poetry or a passage of poetry, sometimes also a synonym for poetry as a whole. Stanzas group poetic lines into larger units.
Couplet: A pair of successive poetic lines, often linked by meter or rhyme. A couplet is a compact two-line stanza or a paired unit within a longer stanza.
Ottava rima: An eight-line Italian stanza form with the rhyme scheme ABABABCC. Its fixed length and closing couplet demonstrate a tightly patterned stanza.
Lyric poetry: Poetry that expresses a speaker’s thoughts or feelings, often in a compact, musical form. Stanzas can divide a lyric’s shifts in thought or emotion.
Poetic meter: The recurring pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry. Meter can continue across lines within a stanza or vary between stanzas.
Quatrain: A stanza or poem consisting of four lines. The four-line quatrain is one of the most common stanza forms.
Spenserian stanza: A nine-line stanza form with eight iambic pentameter lines and a final alexandrine, rhyming ABABBCBCC. Its extended design makes stanza form shape a poem’s pace and sound.
Narrative poetry: Poetry that tells a story through verse. Stanza groups can organize episodes, scenes, or turns in a poetic narrative.
Rhyme scheme: The pattern of end rhymes across lines in a poem or passage. End-rhyme patterns often mark stanza boundaries and connect lines within each group.
Tercet: A group of three poetic lines, which may form a stanza or part of a larger poem. A tercet shows how stanza length can be defined by a fixed line count.
