Staphylococcal infection

An infection caused by bacteria in the genus Staphylococcus, ranging from localized skin disease to invasive illness. Its course depends on the species, infection site, and bacterial resistance.

Staphylococcus aureus: A bacterial species that commonly colonizes human skin and noses and can cause infections from boils to sepsis. It causes many staphylococcal infections, including severe invasive disease.
Skin abscess: A localized collection of pus within skin or underlying tissue, usually caused by bacterial infection. Abscesses are a common presentation of S. aureus infection and often require drainage.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: A strain of Staphylococcus aureus resistant to methicillin and most related beta-lactam antibiotics. MRSA is a resistant subset of S. aureus infections that requires different antibiotic choices.
Bacteremia: The presence of bacteria in the bloodstream, which may be transient or associated with serious infection. Staphylococcal bacteremia can signal bloodstream invasion and requires careful evaluation.
Staphylococcus: A genus of Gram-positive bacteria characterized by spherical cells that often form grape-like clusters. Staphylococcal infections are caused by members of this bacterial genus.
Coagulase-negative staphylococci: Staphylococcus species that lack the enzyme coagulase and often cause infections associated with implanted medical devices. These species can infect devices and prosthetic materials despite often being skin commensals.
Cellulitis: A bacterial infection of the deeper skin and subcutaneous tissues that causes spreading redness, warmth, and swelling. Staphylococci are among the bacteria that cause this spreading skin infection.
Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus: A Staphylococcus aureus strain that remains susceptible to methicillin-class beta-lactam antibiotics. MSSA infections allow beta-lactam treatment options that MRSA infections do not.
Sepsis: Life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated response to infection. Staphylococcal infection can trigger sepsis when the host response causes organ dysfunction.
Gram-positive bacteria: Bacteria that retain crystal violet stain because their cell walls contain a thick peptidoglycan layer. Staphylococci belong to this broad bacterial group, which shapes laboratory identification.
