Star polygon

A star polygon is a polygonal figure formed by joining nonconsecutive vertices of a regular polygon in a repeating step pattern. Its edges may cross, producing a self-intersecting outline.

Regular polygon: A polygon with equal side lengths and equal interior angles. Star polygons connect selected vertices of a regular polygon.
Schläfli symbol: A notation {p/q} for a regular star polygon with p vertices and step q. It compactly records the vertex count and skip pattern that define a regular star polygon.
Euclid: An ancient Greek mathematician whose Elements systematized much of classical geometry. The Elements discusses the regular pentagram, an early geometric star construction.
Stellation: A process of extending the faces or edges of a polygon or polyhedron to form a star-shaped figure. Stellation generalizes star-making from polygons to three-dimensional polyhedra.
Star-shaped polygon: A simple polygon whose interior is star-shaped, meaning some point inside sees every point of the polygon. Unlike a star polygon, it has no crossing edges and need not have a star-like outline.
Polygon: A closed plane figure formed from a finite sequence of straight line segments. A star polygon extends the ordinary idea of a polygon through vertex skipping and crossings.
Self-intersecting polygon: A polygonal closed path whose nonadjacent edges cross one another. Many star polygons belong to this broader class of polygonal paths.
Thomas Bradwardine: A fourteenth-century English mathematician and theologian who wrote on geometry and proportion. His geometric work includes an early systematic treatment of star polygons.
Uniform tiling: A tiling of the plane whose vertices are equivalent under its symmetry group and whose faces are regular polygons. Star polygons can serve as faces in some tilings of the plane.
Star polyhedron: A polyhedron whose faces or arrangement extend into a star-shaped form, often with self-intersections. It is the three-dimensional counterpart of star-like polygonal constructions.
