State

A state is a political organization that claims sovereignty over a territory and its population. It maintains institutions that make and enforce rules within that territory.

Sovereignty: The supreme authority to govern a territory, free from subordination to another power. A state’s claim to independent authority rests on this principle.
Bureaucracy: An administrative organization structured through offices, specialized roles, and formal rules. State agencies use bureaucratic routines to administer territory and public policy.
Treaty of Westphalia: The 1648 peace settlement that ended major conflicts in the Holy Roman Empire and helped shape European diplomacy. It is often associated with the development of territorial sovereignty, though its role is debated.
Nation-State: A state whose political boundaries and institutions are associated with a nation claiming collective identity. It is a specific form of state that links political authority to national identity.
Citizenship: A legal and political status defining membership in a state and the rights and duties attached to it. States determine formal membership and commonly attach political rights to it.
Territoriality: The organization of authority and social relations through control of geographic space. A state’s jurisdiction is tied to bounded territory.
Taxation: The compulsory collection of resources by public authorities to finance collective functions. Tax revenues fund state institutions and help extend their capacity.
State Formation: The historical process through which political institutions consolidate authority over territory and populations. It traces how states acquire durable institutions and control.
Empire: A political order in which a central power rules multiple peoples or territories, often with unequal status. Empires organize authority across diverse territories rather than relying on equal sovereign units.
International Relations: The study and practice of relations among states and other actors across borders. States remain central actors in diplomacy, conflict, and international institutions.
