State of exception

A state of exception is a situation in which a government claims extraordinary powers that suspend or bypass ordinary legal protections, usually in response to a perceived crisis.

Emergency powers: Legal or political authorities granted to governments for responding to emergencies. They are the powers a government invokes to act beyond ordinary legal limits.
Roman dictatorship: An exceptional Roman Republic magistracy granting one person temporary, concentrated authority during a crisis. It provides an ancient precedent for temporary concentration of power under a public emergency.
