State of siege

A state of siege is an emergency legal status that gives government authorities expanded powers during a perceived threat, often restricting civil liberties or transferring authority to the military.

Martial law: Military authorities exercise powers ordinarily held by civilian government, usually during conflict or severe disorder. It may accompany a state of siege, but describes military rule rather than the emergency status itself.
Siege warfare: Military operations that surround and isolate a fortified place to compel its surrender. The legal status takes its name from the older condition of a place under military siege.
