Staten Island

Staten Island is the southernmost borough of New York City, separated from New Jersey by the Arthur Kill and Kill Van Kull. It is also Richmond County.

New York City: The largest city in the United States by population, comprising five boroughs in southeastern New York State. Staten Island is one of the city's five boroughs.
Lenape: An Indigenous people whose homelands include parts of present-day New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Lenape communities lived on Staten Island before European colonization.
Staten Island Railway: A rapid-transit railway running along Staten Island's east side between St. George and Tottenville. It serves neighborhoods along the island's principal rail corridor.
Manhattan: The most densely populated borough of New York City, occupying an island at the mouth of the Hudson River. Its dense urban core contrasts with Staten Island's lower density and suburban character.
Richmond County: A county in New York State whose boundaries coincide with those of Staten Island. The island's borough and county governments cover the same territory.
New Netherland: A seventeenth-century Dutch colony centered on the Hudson River and governed from New Amsterdam. Dutch colonial rule brought European settlement to Staten Island.
Bayonne Bridge: A steel arch bridge crossing the Kill Van Kull between Staten Island and Bayonne, New Jersey. It carries road traffic across the island's northern boundary.
Brooklyn: A borough of New York City occupying the western end of Long Island. Brooklyn is the island's other direct borough connection across the Narrows.
Arthur Kill: A tidal strait separating Staten Island from mainland New Jersey. This waterway forms part of Staten Island's western boundary.
New Amsterdam: The Dutch colonial settlement at the southern tip of Manhattan that became New York City. Staten Island was governed from this neighboring colonial center.
