Static friction

Static friction is the contact force that opposes impending relative motion between surfaces that are not sliding. Its magnitude adjusts up to a maximum set by the surfaces and their normal force.

Normal force: The component of a contact force perpendicular to the surfaces in contact. It sets the scale of the maximum static friction in the Coulomb model.
Newton's laws of motion: Three laws relating force, mass, and motion in classical mechanics. They determine how friction combines with other forces to prevent acceleration.
Walking: A form of locomotion in which the body advances through alternating foot contacts with the ground. The ground's static friction on a planted foot supplies forward or backward traction.
Kinetic friction: The frictional force opposing relative sliding between surfaces already in motion. Unlike static friction, it acts during sliding and is commonly modeled with a different coefficient.
Coefficient of static friction: A dimensionless parameter used to estimate the maximum static friction between two specified surfaces. Multiplying it by normal force gives the idealized slipping threshold.
Force: An interaction that can change an object's motion or deform it. Static friction is one force in the balance acting on an object.
Tire traction: The force a tire can transmit to a road without losing its required grip. Rolling tires rely on static friction at the contact patch when they do not skid.
Rolling resistance: The resistance to motion of a rolling body, often caused by deformation and microslip. It can oppose rolling even when the contact region is not macroscopically sliding.
Friction cone: A geometric representation of contact forces that can be sustained without sliding. It shows all force directions and magnitudes allowed before this contact slips.
Equilibrium mechanics: The study of bodies whose net force and net torque are zero. A stationary object can remain at rest when friction balances other forces.
