Statin-associated muscle symptoms

Muscle pain, weakness, cramps, or related symptoms reported during statin treatment. Their causes vary, and symptoms do not always result from the statin itself.

Statin-associated myalgia: Muscle discomfort reported during statin use without substantial muscle injury or elevated creatine kinase. This common symptom pattern can occur without measurable muscle damage.
Statin discontinuation: Temporary or permanent cessation of statin therapy, often to assess adverse effects or change treatment. A supervised pause may help assess whether symptoms improve off treatment.
Statins: A class of drugs that inhibit HMG-CoA reductase and lower blood cholesterol, especially LDL cholesterol. These are the medicines during whose treatment the symptoms are reported.
Hypothyroid myopathy: Muscle pain or weakness caused by deficient thyroid hormone, sometimes with elevated creatine kinase. Hypothyroidism can mimic or increase susceptibility to statin-associated muscle symptoms.
Statin-associated myopathy: Muscle symptoms associated with statin treatment, often accompanied by elevated creatine kinase. It describes symptoms with stronger evidence of muscle injury than uncomplicated myalgia.
Statin rechallenge: Restarting a statin after a pause to evaluate whether symptoms recur and test tolerability. Recurrence after restarting can inform whether symptoms are linked to a particular regimen.
HMG-CoA reductase: An enzyme that catalyzes a rate-limiting step in the body's cholesterol synthesis pathway. Statins inhibit this enzyme, initiating their cholesterol-lowering action.
Exercise-induced muscle damage: Temporary muscle soreness and injury caused by strenuous or unfamiliar physical activity. Recent exercise can explain symptoms or enzyme elevations attributed to statins.
Rhabdomyolysis: Severe breakdown of skeletal muscle that releases intracellular contents into the bloodstream. This rare, dangerous endpoint can follow severe statin-related muscle injury.
Statin switching: Changing from one statin to another to improve tolerability or meet lipid-lowering goals. Different statins and doses may be tolerated differently by the same patient.
