Steering wheel

A hand-operated control that changes a vehicle’s direction by turning its steered wheels or steering mechanism. In cars, it is the driver’s primary directional control.

Rack and pinion: A gear mechanism that converts a rotating input into straight-line motion. In many cars, it converts steering-wheel rotation into lateral movement of the front wheels.
Vehicle dynamics: The study of forces and motion in road vehicles. It explains how steering inputs interact with speed, grip, and vehicle motion.
Panhard et Levassor: A French automobile manufacturer that helped establish the modern front-engine, rear-wheel-drive car layout. Its early cars used steering wheels as motor-vehicle controls in the 1890s.
Automobile safety: The design and use of measures intended to reduce harm in road vehicles. Safety engineering shapes the wheel’s structure, placement, and interaction with occupants.
Steering linkage: The rods and joints that transmit steering motion to a vehicle’s steered wheels. It carries motion from the steering gear to the wheels.
Slip angle: The angle between a tire’s direction of travel and the direction it points. Tire slip angle generates the lateral forces that make a steered vehicle turn.
Alfred Vacheron: A French engineer and racing driver associated with an early use of a steering wheel in an automobile. He drove a Panhard car fitted with a steering wheel in the 1894 Paris–Rouen competition.
Airbag: An inflatable restraint that deploys during certain collisions to reduce occupant injury. A driver airbag is commonly housed in the steering-wheel hub.
Power steering: A system that reduces the effort required to turn a vehicle’s steered wheels. It assists the driver’s effort at the wheel, hydraulically or electrically.
Lateral force: A force acting sideways relative to a moving vehicle or tire. The tires’ lateral forces redirect the vehicle after the wheel is turned.
