Stefan Dušan

Stefan Dušan (c. 1308–1355) was a Serbian ruler who expanded his realm across much of the Balkans, proclaimed himself emperor, and issued Dušan’s Code.

Stefan Dečanski: Stefan Dečanski was a Serbian king from 1322 to 1331 and the father of Stefan Dušan. His defeat and deposition by Dušan opened the way for Dušan’s reign.
Dušan’s Code: Dušan’s Code was a collection of laws promulgated in the Serbian Empire in 1349 and supplemented in 1354. Its provisions set out legal and social rules for the empire Dušan ruled.
Battle of Maritsa: The Battle of Maritsa was a 1371 Ottoman victory over Serbian forces near the Maritsa River. The defeat accelerated the fragmentation of the empire Dušan had built.
Stefan the First-Crowned: Stefan the First-Crowned was the first crowned king of Serbia, ruling from 1217 to 1228. His royal coronation established the Serbian kingship that Dušan later elevated to an empire.
Nemanjić dynasty: The Nemanjić dynasty was a Serbian ruling house that governed from the twelfth through the fourteenth centuries. Dušan inherited a kingdom whose institutions and legitimacy had been built by his dynasty.
Serbian Orthodox Church: The Serbian Orthodox Church is the Eastern Orthodox church centered in Serbia, established as an autocephalous archbishopric in 1219. Its elevation to a patriarchate supported the religious standing of Dušan’s imperial title.
Battle of Kosovo: The Battle of Kosovo was a 1389 battle between Ottoman and Serbian-led forces on the Kosovo field. It belongs to the later struggle over Serbian lands after Dušan’s empire had fragmented.
Simeon Uroš: Simeon Uroš was a half-brother of Stefan Dušan who claimed the Serbian imperial title after Dušan’s death. His rival claim shows that Dušan’s imperial succession was contested rather than secure.
Battle of Velbazhd: The Battle of Velbazhd was a 1330 Serbian victory over Bulgaria near present-day Kyustendil. The victory strengthened Serbia before Dušan’s expansion and accession.
Serbian Patriarchate of Peć: The Serbian Patriarchate of Peć was the autocephalous patriarchate established in 1346 under Stefan Dušan. Its creation accompanied Dušan’s imperial coronation and the elevation of the Serbian church.
