Stellar luminosity

Stellar luminosity is the total energy a star emits per unit time across all wavelengths. It is an intrinsic power, distinct from the apparent brightness measured at a particular distance.

Stefan–Boltzmann law: A physical law stating that a blackbody’s emitted power per unit area is proportional to the fourth power of its absolute temperature. It relates a star’s effective temperature and radius to its total luminosity.
Apparent magnitude: A logarithmic measure of the apparent brightness of a celestial object as observed from Earth. It describes received brightness, which can differ greatly from intrinsic luminosity.
Hertzsprung–Russell diagram: A plot comparing stars’ luminosities with their surface temperatures or spectral types. It displays how luminosity tracks stellar temperature and evolutionary state.
Luminous flux: The rate at which radiant energy from a source passes through a surface or reaches an observer. Unlike luminosity, flux depends on distance from the star.
Effective temperature: The temperature of a blackbody that would emit the same power per unit area as a real object. It provides the temperature used with stellar radius to calculate luminosity.
Absolute magnitude: The apparent magnitude an astronomical object would have at a distance of 10 parsecs. It expresses intrinsic brightness through a standardized distance convention.
Main sequence: The evolutionary phase in which a star fuses hydrogen into helium in its core. Main-sequence luminosity varies systematically with stellar mass.
Illuminance: The amount of visible-light luminous flux incident on a surface per unit area. It weights visible light by human vision and measures light arriving at a surface.
Stellar radius: The characteristic distance from a star’s center to its photosphere. A larger emitting surface raises luminosity at the same effective temperature.
Solar luminosity: The Sun’s total radiant power, approximately 3.83 × 10²⁶ watts, used as a unit for stellar luminosities. It is the standard reference unit for comparing stars’ total power.
